Reposting from FB - Dr Maslee Malik's top 10 Favourite Books

#MALAYSIAMEMBACA: APAKAH 10 BUKU KEGEMARAN ANDA?
1. "The Alchemist" karya Paulo Coelho.
You will never be able to escape from your heart. So it’s better to listen to what it has to say."
2. "Trust: The Social Virtue and the Creation of Prosperity" karya Francis Fukuyama
Kata Fukuyama, “To truly esteem oneself means that one must be capable of feeling shame or self-disgust when one does not live up to a certain standard.”
3. "Manuklon" karya Rahmat Haron
7. "Al Tawhid: Its Implications for Thought and Life" karya Ismail Raji al-Faruqi.
8. "Al-Munqidh min al-dalal" atau diterjemahkan sebagai "Guide for The Perplexed" karya Al-Ghazali.

What's New, Pussycat? by Alexandra Potter

Synopsis :

What would you do if your boyfriend proposed?

Say yes, text everyone with the good news or take out a subscription to Brides magazine.

Delilah does none of the above

Instead she packs up her beloved Tom Jones record collection and heads to London in search of a new life and a new man.  Only she meets two..Charlie, the sexy media mogul and Sam, best friend and confidante.

Everything seems perfect. Thrown into a whirlwind of glamorous parties, five-star restaurants and designer penthouses, Delilah couldn't be happier. After all it's a million miles away from her old life. And her old self.

Which is exactly what she wanted.  Isn't it?

This is what I say :

What's New, Pussycat? is quite predictable.  No prizes as to whom she ended up with. It's pretty much the standard recipe for such chic lite.

Even then, it was an enjoyable read which kept me company while I waited for the light to turn green. Yes, this is one of my 'traffic light' read.

While it is predictable and quite cliche in many ways, it was funny (especially best friend Vivienne) and if you do have time to spare and want's some laugh and cheering up, you can give this title a try.

In case you, like me, is a noob on Tom Jones and wondering about the book title, well, the title of the book is the title of a song by this singer, so there you have it...although how appropriate is it, I can't really tell.

Under The Dome by Stephen King

Add caption

Synopsis :

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when -- or if -- it will go away.
Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens -- town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing -- even murder -- to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out.
This is what I say :
I must admit that I have seen the TV Series based on this title a few years ago.  It spanned over three seasons and in my opinion, it went downhill as the season went.  The series started off strong and was super exciting and I was engrossed in following it. However, towards the mid of season two, the story-line gets too chaotic and and the show lost it mojo.
As such, when I got myself a copy of the book not too long ago, I was actually quite apprehensive as I wasn't sure how close the story-line runs parallel to the book and how much deviation there will be.
However, since I am committed to the book, I better just give it a try and right from the start, the difference is very obvious and I realised that there's a great and huge difference between the book and the series.
While the series was rather good, the book is good too.  It's actually more intense and I would think if this book is made into a movie, and the movie stays truth to the book, it would be a rather great movie as visually, I think it would be rather awesome.
Anyway, while this is not the 'true horror' style that the King of Horror are known for, it was still terrifying intense and intensely terrifying.
Being a fan of Stephen King, I am rather glad I read Under The Dome.

A Suggestion of Death by Marianne Wesson

I started this book during my weekend gateaway end of last month and it's only now that I managed to complete it.  It has been a long laborious read with plenty of distraction in between and a couple of assignments to complete which I did and submitted just today itself!

A Suggestion of Death is a legal term.  Quoting from Wikipedia, in law, it refers to calling the death of a party to the attention of a court and making it a matter of record, as a step in the revival of an action abated by the death of a party. In the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, it is governed by Fed.

I never knew that. Glad I learn something new just from the title.  I thought it's about murder! And reading the book, I was like wondering when is the murder going to take place and who is being killed off! hahah...talk about being off the mark!

Anyway, A Suggestion of Death isn't really that great of a book.   It was just entertaining enough without being boring and there is a mystery to be solved and at the end, a murder did take place.

Characters that were being initially painted as being villains weren't really villains after all.  But it was pretty sad as one of the characters is pretty messed up and all due to an incident that wasn't her fault and that she couldn't remember and from which she was protected from remembering as it can caused much destruction to herself and to those around her if she does.

Book Purchase #2 - June 2018

This post is to keep track of books that I purchase this year.  However, it excludes books purchase for the princess which is for her to keep track..not me.

Happy Potter and The Deathly Hallows is the second book that I purchased this year.  I bought it as a pre-loved copy from a very nice lady from KL.  The book cost me RM8.  It's in hardcover in relatively good condition.

As we were not able to synchronize our time for a meet up, I asked her to post to me.  Needless to say the postage cost more than the book!

But still, it's a nice addition to my collection...this would be the third title that I have in the whole set so I have four titles more to go and each titles has to be this particular publication.  I guess when my collection is complete, I will share them with you.

So, welcome Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to my family of books.  Your new home would be my shelf where you will stay unread but much love...hahah...

Book purchase #1 is here.

My Visit to the Big Bad Wolf Sales July 2018

Early this month the princess and I made plans to drop by the BBW Sales one of the weekdays.

However, it was a super busy work week for me that particular week and there are official dinners being planned for a few of the evenings and that particular evening was not spared.  I was very much conflicted as I am accountable and committed to work but at the same time, I am accountable and committed to a promise made.

AT the end of the day, I decided that I have been neglecting and not been spending much time with her for the past weeks and so I choose to keep to my promise.

Off we went after dinner to the much anticipated BBW Sales in Borneo 744.

It wasn't difficult to find with the help of Waze even though it's practically in the middle of no-where.  As the BBW sales is part of the Rainforest Fringe Festival, there were other events happening at the same venue but the night we went, the events were mostly over so it was rather quiet.  Everyone that were there were just there for the BBW Sales.

What's my experience?  Well, my expectation was high but reality was disappointing.  The hall was small (Popular Bookstores Sales was much bigger) and the selection miserable.

Maybe because we were there at on the final 4 days  (we went on Wed night and sales supposed to end on Sunday night), a lot of the books were sold out.

There was the Alex Riders series but we got the set from Bookalicous a few months ago.  There were odds and ends copies of various series  and quite a fair bit of box set but I wasn't into collecting box set so they did not appeal to me.

I know that BBW did say it's just a bite size but still, I wish they didn't bother as I felt they underestimate the readers here. I am not sure if these are leftovers or not from their KL Sales as I have never been to their KL Sales.

I felt like I have been promised a slice of cake and all I saw was not even a mouthful and I didn't even bother to eat as it wasn't the flavor of my liking.

We went home empty handed but it was a priceless bonding time.
