Finger Lickin' Fifteen by Janet Evanovich

Synopsis :

Unbuckle your belt and pull up a chair. It's the spiciest, sauciest, most rib-sticking Plum yet.

Recipe for disaster: Celebrity chef Stanley Chipotle comes to Trenton in a barbecue cookoff and loses his head - literally.

Throw in some spice: Bail bonds office worker Lula is witness to the crime, and the only one she'll talk to is Trenton cop Joe Morelli.

Pump up the heat: Chipotle's sponsor is offering a million-dollar reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the capture of the killers.

Stir the pot: Lula recruits bounty hunter Stephanie Plum to help find he killer and collect the moolah.

Add a secret ingredient: Stephanie Plum's Grandma Mazur. Enough said.

Bring to a boil: Stephanie Plum is working overtime tracking felons for the bonds office at night and snooping for security expert Carlos Manoso, aka Ranger, during the day. Can Stephanie hunt down two killers, a traitor, and five skips, keep her grandmother out of the sauce, and solve Ranger's problems and not jump his bones?

This is what I say :

I am getting slightly bored of Stephanie.  After fifteen books, I would have expected her to move on at some point in her life but she still seems to be the same, doing the same thing, facing the same issues both at work, love and parents.

I mean I dont want to be the same me after fifteen books so I don't know why she wants to be the same...I would like for her to communicate with the author to make her different and it might go something like this :

Hey Janet,

This is Stephanie.  I am pretty tired of doing the same old thing book in and book out.  I mean, it's been fifteen time and I am quite tired (not to say costly) for my car to blow up all the time, my apartment too come to think of it.  I am tired of the losers my mum seems to parade in front of me. Can you get her to parade some rather good contenders?  Also if you intend for Joe and I to be together, I don't mind trying out the marriage thingy...I want to do the grown up thing for a change.

Can you also give me a make over, I seems to be in jeans and tees and ponytail hair for the past fifteen books and while that's good, something along the line of 'How do I look?' would be great too. And while I like Lula, she needs a change as well. Pls don't forever keeping her in her flashy and loud clothes  Can you like cause some life defining moment for her and give her a total change...perhaps she can get a concussion and get a personality make over...even temporary would be fine too.

Oh ya, and if I am not married to Joe, I don't mind trying out with Ranger then.

Love Stephanie

What do you think?  Anyway, somehow  I have a feeling aht Stephanie will always be Stephanie but one can wish right?

House of The Hanging Jade by Amy M. Reade

Synopsis :

A dark presence had invaded the Jorgensens' house. On a spectacular bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, something evil is watching and waiting . . .

Tired of the cold winters in Washington, D.C. and disturbed by her increasingly obsessive boyfriend, Kailani Kanaka savors her move back to her native Big Island of Hawaii. She also finds a new job as personal chef for the Jorgensen family. The gentle caress of the Hawaiian trade winds, the soft sigh of the swaying palm trees, and the stunning blue waters of the Pacific lull her into a sense of calm at the House of Hanging Jade--an idyll that quickly fades as it becomes apparent that dark secrets lurk within her new home. Furtive whispers in the night, a terrifying shark attack, and the discovery of a dead body leave Kailani shaken and afraid. But it's the unexpected appearance of her ex-boyfriend, tracking her every move and demanding she return to him, that has her fearing for her life . . .

This is what I say :

I didn't buy this book. I read it as an e-copy and it took me 2 days.  I read it thinking that it's a horror story.  It is not.  I'ts more like a suspense romantic thriller but it wasn't very suspenseful and neither was it very romantic and thrilling.  It's a rather lukewarm in many ways.

The focus of the story is Kailani and the family she is working for as a personal chef.  I was quite bored with her character and it wasn't difficult to guess what was going to happen next.  I wasn't very impressed by the writing as well.  It wasn't that bad but unfortunately the story line and content was not able to contribute at all to zest up the book.

Sorry to say this but I wont be recommending this title to anyone at all.

She's been watching us for a while now...

Now you see her

Now you don't

Ten year old Tom lived by a neglected church. Is he the only one who sees the strange, solitary child playing there? And what is she trying to tell him?

Now you run

There's a new vicar in town - Harry. But menacing events suggest he isn't welcome. What terrible secret is this town hiding?

Sometimes I wish that she'd just leave me in peace

This is what I say :

I am really  behind in my reading and in my posting.  I am actually reading a different kind of books nowadays...and am very slow in in social and casual read.  Currently having two books with me...one in the car for the boring moments while waiting for traffic to clear and another one on my bedside table which I can managed only about 3 chapters each night.  At the rate I am going, I probably will only read 1 book per month....horrors!!

Anyway, Blood Harvest was actually read quite a while ago and I forgot all about it because I have since sold off the book.

It is a great book...it's creepyly great and greatly creepy.  The suspense started right at the first chapter and it really builds up.  There was a point in the book where I was so creeped out I dare not go down to the kitchen for a cup of water (being quite late in the night and everyone has turned in).  And then, there's a part in the book when the vicar is in the church and he was reading out some verses and a voice joined him towards the end and ended the verse for him...that would be something that I won't forget in quite a long time!

So, if you have a chance to read Blood Harvest, grab it.  If you wanted something scary, Blood Harvest delivers!

Dreams of Joy by Lisa See

Synopsis :

Acclaimed author Lisa See returns to the story of sisters Pearl and May from Shanghai Girls, and Pearl’s strong-willed nineteen-year-old daughter, Joy.

Reeling from newly uncovered family secrets, Joy runs away to Shanghai in early 1957 to find her birth father—the artist Z.G. Li, with whom both May and Pearl were once in love. Dazzled by him, and blinded by idealism and defiance, Joy throws herself into the New Society of Red China, heedless of the dangers in the Communist regime.

Devastated by Joy’s flight and terrified for her safety, Pearl is determined to save her daughter, no matter the personal cost. From the crowded city to remote villages, Pearl confronts old demons and almost insurmountable challenges as she follows Joy, hoping for reconciliation.

Yet even as Joy’s and Pearl’s separate journeys converge, one of the most tragic episodes in China’s history threatens their very lives.

Never a fan of Asian writers but in this case, I give an exemption.  It wasn't an easy start though. It took a while for me to warm up to Dreams of Joy and throughout, I felt really like a typical Asian parent, both loving and criticizing the offspring at the same time, wanting to protect but at the same time wanting to expose them to lives

Anyway, even though it's a sequel, I did not read the first book which is Shanghai Girls but I can still follow the story line as it's a pretty much different story altogether.  I guess those who read the first book would doubly enjoy this title as a closure to the whole saga.

Wrapped Up In You by Carole Matthews

Synopsis :

Thirty-something hairdresser Janie Johnson's single status is a constant source of gossip for her friends and clients. So after too many nights in with her cat, a blind date disaster and news that her ex is getting married, Janie realises it's time to do something dramatic with her life. It's time for an adventure!

Leaving winter behind, Janie takes the plunge and books an exotic trip to Africa. Her friends think she's mad and Janie thinks they may very well be right . . . but then she falls head over heels for her tour guide - and fully fledged Maasai Warrior - Dominic. But can Janie now face spending a snowy Christmas back home without him?

I was quite tempted to DNF this.

I just don't know what to think of it.  The cover of the book was pleasant enough. Extremely attractive, in my opinion and so I was expecting a rather equally attractive story in Wrapped in You.

It wasn't that it's bad, It is actually quite cute but too romantic that it became unbelievable? I dont know. Perhaps the romantic in my is jaded but I wasn't really keen on the plot and storyline.

And a warrior who doesn't really eat and sleep and drink milk?  I wonder if the author really researched thoroughly?  I somehow don't really get that from the book.

I still don't know what to think of this.

Rush Home Road by Lori Lansens

Synopsis :

Sharla Cody is only five, but has already lived a troubled life -- only to find herself dumped on an elderly neighbor's doorstep when her mother takes off for the summer. Although Sharla is not the angelic child Addy Shadd had pictured when she agreed to look after her, the two soon forge a deep bond.

To Addy's surprise, Sharla's presence brings back memories of her own childhood in Rusholme, a town settled by fugitive slaves in the mid-1800s. She reminisces about her family, her first love, and the painful experience that drove her away from home.

Brilliantly structured -- and achingly lyrical, this is a story about the redeeming power of love and memory, and about two unlikely people who transform each other's lives forever.

This book is quite a dark horse.  I wasn't expecting to like it but liked it I did.

The story alternates between Addy of young and Addy of current time.  However, the way the author alternates the story is very smooth and the flow was almost perfect.  While I was engrossed with the Addy of the past, I was intrigued by Addy of now. And the ending...a Hallmark ending for sure and make you sheds

A most enjoyable book.
